Join Livable Sunnyvale and Catalyze SV for a special joint meeting via Zoom to review CityLine projects for Downtown Sunnyvale. The objective of this meeting is for both advocacy organizations to review the first projects that CityLine will be bringing to the Sunnyvale Planning Commission and City Council.

The detailed agenda is posted here, but basically the meeting will start at 6:30 pm with a presentation by Travis Duncan, Assistant Vice-President of Sares Regis, followed by questions and feedback regarding any concerns. Then Catalyze SV and Livable Sunnyvale will discuss the projects together. Catalyze SV has a specific process for scoring projects. Livable Sunnyvale will schedule a meeting later so our members can vote regarding our support.

Catalyze SV and Livable Sunnyvale share many values and advocacy objectives. We have been looking for an opportunity for a joint event for some time, so this should be an exciting event. By working together, we amplify the voices of both organizations.

Guest Presenter: Travis Duncan, Assistant Vice President of Sares RegisTravis is knowledgeable about almost every aspect of Sunnyvale’s CityLine Downtown development.  Fun fact:  he was the “man behind the scenes” putting our ice rink and shows together last winter!

Travis will be giving us some background on what has been done in our downtown but also what we can expect in light of our current disastrous public health situation.  There will be lots of time allotted for your questions.

ONE – Nadia Aziz, the Directing Attorney at the Law Foundation of Silicon Valley will discuss Mobile Home Closure Ordinances. Mobile Home Parks residents have experienced increased stress as owners sell their mobile home parks to new owners.

What happens when a Mobile Home Park is sold and the new owner wishes to redevelop the land? How are residents protected? What are the current protections in San Jose and Sunnyvale?

TWO – John Cordes representing the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition will give a quick overview of the new Sunnyvale Active Transportation Plan. Hear about the Safe Routes to School Plan, the Pedestrian and the Bicycle Master Plans. Plus, we’ll get details about how we can critically review and provide input. The comment period runs until March 21st. If you want to make a difference shaping Sunnyvale transportation  – don’t miss this meeting.

There will be a special City Council meeting on February 4th, 5:30 PM, to present the results of the Housing Strategy Study. This Study Issue was approved by the Council almost 2 years ago as an omnibus study issue covering a wide range of issues related to housing in Sunnyvale.

Issues include:

• Rent stabilization programs for Sunnyvale mobile home parks
• Age-friendliness of housing in Sunnyvale
• Strategies to increase the affordable housing supply, such as a land acquisition financing program for non-profit developers and reinstating an updated rental inclusionary ordinance consistent with AB 1505
• Strategies to help with the demand for affordable housing, such as homebuyer, tenant, and financial literacy education programs

At our next meeting on February 12th (note the change of date), 6:30 pm at Toyota Sunnyvale, 898 W. El Camino Real, Sunnyvale, our topics will be:

1. Sunnyvale Active Transportation Plan

How can we continue to improve options for bicyclists and pedestrians in Sunnyvale?

How can Sunnyvale students more safely walk and bike to school?

The City of Sunnyvale is exploring these questions as part of a year-long effort to create an Active Transportation Plan that will address bicycle, pedestrian and Safe Routes to Schools needs throughout the City.

The Active Transportation Plan will help the City strategically invest in programs and projects to make walking and bicycling safer and more convenient for residents. In addition, the Plan will analyze ways to make it safer for Sunnyvale students to walk and bike to school.

2. Study Issues. We will look at Study Issues being considered by the City Council related to housing and transportation.

3. Measures G and H

Since the cost of attending California’s public universities has risen to almost five times that of attending a community college, many students and their families rely on their local community college to get a high-quality education and save tens of thousands of dollars. At the same time, the needs of students who face hunger and housing insecurity is a growing challenge across our district. To address these needs, the Board of Trustees voted unanimously on Nov. 25 to place two measures on the March 3, 2020 ballot.

Measure G – the Foothill-De Anza Community College District Affordable Career, College Transfer, Classroom Repair Measure – is a $898 million general obligation bond that would cost property owners approximately 1.6 cents per $100 of assessed value (not market value) annually through 2053-54.

Measure H – the Educational and Teacher Excellence Parcel Tax – is a $48 parcel tax that would be levied for five years and raise approximately $5.6 million annually.

These measures are designed to increase opportunities and support for local students to earn college credits, certifications, and job skills at a reasonable price and transfer to four-year universities.

When we last saw the El Camino Real Specific Plan, at the end of 2017, Sunnyvale’s City Council had selected a preferred land use alternative from among the four presented for consideration (click on the links for the staff report and  meeting video).  After receiving recommendations from the ECR Plan Advisory Committee (ECRPAC), staff and the Planning Commission, considering input from the online survey and public workshops, hearing input from public speakers at the hearing, and much deliberation, the City Council selected Alternative R PLUS as the land use plan to be studied and developed further. Of the four alternatives, ALT-R PLUS is the land use plan that identified the greatest amount of residential development opportunity along the El Camino Real corridor while still preserving opportunities for additional commercial growth.

After a long hiatus, the City is appointing a new Advisory Committee and will hold the next meeting on January 24th, 6:00 pm in the Neighborhood Room, Recreation Center, 550 E Remington Drive, Sunnyvale, CA 94087

The agenda includes looking at changes in State law that impact the plan, status of the EIR and the ECR Specific Plan.
